This April 2002 note from Arthur C. Clarke, along with a copy of his October 1945 paper on satellite telecommunication, was uploaded to Mastodon in under 2 seconds, using a phased-array antenna drawing less power than a light bulb to transmit a signal bounced back to Earth by one or more of the satellites you can track in real time here:

I think this is a fine piece; a depiction of a prim woman all wrapped up in her dress, gazing out at a moonlit sea as a star-studded sky twinkles all around her. Almost like she's taking in their energy, their whispers, for answers to some deep matter in life.

America's first spacecraft to orbit Venus, the Pioneer-Venus Orbiter, was launched #OTD in 1978. The spacecraft's radar penetrated Venus's thick atmosphere, allowing scientists to produce this topographical map of the surface. @NASASolarSystem

シャネル・ベンツ著 高山真由美訳『おれの眼を撃った男は死んだ』（東京創元社）が文庫で読めるなんて。印象的なタイトルは「死を悼む人々」という短篇のセリフから。コーマック・マッカーシーにも通じる家族や暴力や奴隷制などを題材とした短編集で、すばらしいです。解説は杉江松恋さん。

十六世紀のイギリスの修道院から、西部開拓時代や奴隷制度下のアメリカ、現代の家族、近未来？　など時代も場所も様々で、当時書かれた手記という体裁の作品がいくつかあるのも面白い。例えば、「アデラ 1） 最初は"黒い航海"として知られ、後に"心臓という赤い小箱"として再版された物語　一八二九年、作者不詳」

『ビリー・ザ・キッド全仕事』を思わせる詩的な文体で書かれた兄妹の強盗の顛末「よくある西部の物語」、『地下鉄道』や『キンドレッド』の緊迫感で奴隷制を描く「オリンダ・トマスの人生における非凡な出来事の奇妙な記録」、時系列を前後して描かれる「外交官の娘」（何度か読み直した）、偽医療で癌だった母を死なせた病院へ亡くなったはずの妹と共に復讐にいく「蜻蛉」、砂漠に埋もれたコミュニティの遺跡を自らの過去とともに発掘する「認識」など、どれも印象的でした。
