This stone lives in our garden, it is covered in lichen and cushions of moss. A mini ecosystem on it's own.

Sorry for the Twitter link, but Patrick Wardle doesn't yet have a Mastodon account that I can find.

Microsoft security blog post "comes close" to ripping off Wardle's "The Art of Mac Malware," and doesn't cite prior research, which it clearly draws upon, he says.

any idea if someone has made or is making an open source alternative to Facebook marketplace? I find marketplace incredibly useful, but would love the possibility of moving to another ad-less platform down the line.

Elon Musk fired Twitter's entire staff in Brazil except a few salespeople.

Among those fired: "eight people who moderated content on the platform in order to catch posts that broke its rules against incitement to violence and misinformation."

I was tooting about scoop this a few days before the new year, hoping maybe Experian would see the wisdom or providing an on the record response. They never did.

Today's story includes a great quote from Sen. Ron Wyden, who told me Experian never responded to him either, in respond to his questions to them about my last scoop in re Experian (where they were letting ID thieves hijack existing Experian.com accounts by simply signing up as the target consumer using a different email address).

Here's the lede:

"Identity thieves have been exploiting a glaring security weakness in the website of Experian, one of the big three consumer credit reporting bureaus. Normally, Experian requires that those seeking a copy of their credit report successfully answer several multiple choice questions about their financial history. But until the end of 2022, Experian's website allowed anyone to bypass these questions and go straight to the consumer's report. All that was needed was the person's name, address, birthday and Social Security number."

Mastodon early on was indeed hella queer ...but it's not just the tech adoption challenges that are barriers to POC. "Mastodon: a partial history" looks at both of those aspects -- the section on "Dogpiling, weaponized content warning discourse, and a fig leaf for mundane white supremacy" discusses some 2017 incidents but similar patterns still occur today.

We've tried the personal-responsibility approach; it doesn't work at all, but that's not the point of it at all.

The "personal responsibility for systemic problems" gag is a _strategy_, not a policy.

It's not meant to "work"; it's meant shift responsibility away from policymakers and on to those subjected to their policies, and letting abusers of the system escape criticism and accountability.

It's frustrating and exhausting because it's working exactly as intended.

Moderating this instance has taught me that we really should strive to understand before assuming bad faith on the part of someone that’s apparently offended us. But when someone crosses your line, they need to go. Don’t be dramatic about it - we don’t get internet points by pointing out the flaws in other people.

Life is too short - for all of us - don’t make it harder on each other than it needs to be.

Happy New Year!

My colleague Devin Paden is making available the Powershell program he wrote to manage our vCenter environment when I was teaching at Champlain College. It allowed us to deploy entire network environments in minutes for each student in a class.

Optical recipe recognition. You take a scan of a cookbook and extract the recipes into a standard format. Much like optical music recognition takes sheet music and extracts it into music xml files. Recipes are facts. Like laws. Nobody owns them.

I know it's the wrong sentiment but I don't like demonstrative charity where you're looking somebody in the face and showing them you're being a good person. So much of evangelical missions is about showing you're a good person, giving grocery money to a lady you've convinced not to get an abortion vs advocating for a reliable safety net.

Henrietta Lacks was a poor, Black, young mother diagnosed w cervical cancer in 1951. When her cells were collected w/o consent, scientists saw they multiplied remarkably fast.

“HeLa” cells changed #science. They’re used globally to study viruses, drugs, hormones, genes, diseases & develop vaccines. Lacks passed away at 31 w no recognition.

Rebecca Skloot’s beautiful book about her life & legacy is changing that. Now her statue will replace Robert E. Lee in NC. nytimes.com/2022/12/20/us/henr #history
