Hi everybody, I’m ready to unveil my year-end-holiday-hack project:
Meet Searchtodon: ***Private*** Timeline Search for Mastodon
It fills a gap that I have been missing over on Twitter as well: “I remember seeing this THING, where was that again?”
It is built with privacy and consent in mind (pls see the FAQ), but is also *an experiment* to see if something like this is accepted by the larger Mastodon community.
Here goes: https://searchtodon.social
@mmasnick @janl I can see this as extremely useful. What I wonder is if labeling it “search” (although technologically correct) might lead to confusion? We’re so used to search boxes that find new things and expand what’s available to us. This by design only shows us things we’ve already seen. It feels more like a memory aid than a typical “search” tool. I’m not sure “private search” adequately conveys that difference. (Compare DuckDuckGo, which could also be called a kind of “private search.”)
Why is the internet so broken, and what could ever possibly fix it? The internet is broken, author Ben Tarnoff argues, because it is owned by private firms and run for profit. Hear from Ben at our IN-PERSON book talk:

On Germany’s national ZDF-TV, meteorologist Özden Terli often explains the connection between global warming and extreme weather events. A portrait of this pioneering weather presenter by Politico, the upmarket brand of tabloid publisher Axel-Springer:

You basically go from having a day job in IT to being an IT open heart surgeon trying to save an entire company full time for months the middle of the chaos of a war zone, where every outcome is hindered by decades of poor business investment.
Which is then covered up for the public with legal privilege and NDAs, so nobody knows how things work, ‘cos you gotta protect shareholder value most important of all.
I've told y'all, I don't care much for #NFL football anymore. But I do care a lot about NFL players.
#DamarHamlin suffered a heart attack on the field, and the game would have continued if both teams hadn't protested.
Up until a few years ago the NFL used race norming, meaning that if both Brett Favre and I won brain damaged settlements my payout would be lower, because "Blacks have lower IQ anyways!"
You may be able to enjoy this sport. I can't.
Wishing Damar a speedy and complete recovery.

"There’s more to #Mastodon than just replacing #Twitter...One of the benefits of the Fediverse is that I can use my preferred system to post things and you can follow and interact with any ActivityPub-compatible system you prefer... It’s all powered by the ActivityPub standard... It’s the end of platform...lock-in. It means every small app can benefit from a network effect previously only available to gatekeeper platforms."

Never mind you can't ski in the Alps this winter. Think about the empty rivers in spring and all the failed harvests this summer all over Europe.
