Sef held up the opened book and pointed at a highlighted passage with their other hand.

"See? 'How to Engage with the Helpful Spirits Around You' has you as a featured spirit to call," they explained.

"Oh," Marakleighthly replied. "That explains why I've been so busy lately. I was starting to wonder..."

Sef nodded. "That's why I summoned you this time, actually. In case nobody had told you."

Marakleighthly smiled a strange smile that made Sef shiver.

"Well, that and I really need a second opinion on this new chocolate cake recipe..."

Well that toilet lid and rug were obviously made out of an acquaintance. This was just basic revenge.

Rosalba woke to the morning sun illuminating her tower room in the warm color of dawn. She stretched and moved to pull half-discarded blankets back over her naked body as if it somehow mattered.

There was a soft snort beside her, a flick of a long graceful tail.

"It's morning," Rosalba said softly. She had let the dragon in, and truly she'd been devoured, but-

"Should I leave?" the dragon asked in a soft growling voice.

"No," Rosalba replied. Someone would be there with her morning meal soon and she didn't want-

"We both should."

"The swarm is coming, the swarm is coming!" Nasi cried as he ran down the main street toward the town lord's mansion.

People quickly closed their windows and then rushed out to the street to make sure everything was ready. Shops shooed out their customers and locked up.

If Nasi said it was time, it was time.

Behind the town lord's mansion, fields of flowers were in full bloom, grown specially every year.

And every year Nasi waited to spot the great clouds of butterflies heading toward the town to make sure everyone could fully enjoy them.

Late at night in the boardinghouse kitchen, Felicie carefully emptied the contents of the fancy vial into her bowl. It was the last ingredient; now she just had to mix everything together and wait for the result.

She mixed and waited, and when nothing seemed to happen, she mixed a bit more and waited a bit longer.

Looking at her book, she was sure she'd done everything right, but-

"You're Felicie, aren't you? What are you making?"

There stood Felicie's cute new neighbor-across-the-hall.

"Something for shyness," Felicie said, smiling.

"We found it!"

Garrett looked from the shallow stream that ran crystal clear through the deepest part of the old forest to his horse, Tari, and smiled wide.

"We really found it!"

Tari didn't seem quite as excited, but Garrett didn't mind. They'd been searching for the stream for years and finally, it was in front of them.

Quickly, Garrett grabbed for a pack, one that was filled with empty vials and quickly he filled them.

And only then did he look again at Tari and then at the stream.

"Well, we found it. We should also make sure it works."

After the mourners left and twilight fell, another group crept into the cemetery. They skulked behind headstones, creeping carefully with their shovels.

The Widow Redmond had been buried with her jewels and she didn't need them where she had gone...

They worked quickly; the sky still had a hint of purple when they cracked open her casket.

And then the Widow Redmond opened her spiritfire eyes.

"I've been dead for ten years, you idiots," she said, grinning.

They were the seventh group of grave-robbers she'd helped catch.

Trying to resist the temptation to say “I’m behind on everything” because it implies there was a chance I could have completed the work in the time available.

And I couldn’t have.

The work is the work and it’ll get done when it gets done. Putting a bunch of pressure on myself to do the impossible isn’t helpful.
