We're in Ahmedabad right now meeting authors and researching the history of Gujarati pulp novels & magazines. Having an absolute blast.

Particularly amazing: The history of Chakram Chandan, a weekly Gujarati fiction & entertainment mag which ran for OVER 70 YEARS (1949-2021). Thriller writer HN "Atom" Golibar took over operations from his father, NJ Golibar, at age 15 (!), and ran it with NO ADS for decades.

Will be posting some vintage art finds and interviews soon!

Today in Labor History May 4, 1970: Ohio National Guards murdered four students at Kent State University. They also injured nine others, including one who was permanently paralyzed. During the massacre, they fired 67 rounds in 13 seconds at the unarmed crowd. The students were protesting the U.S. invasion of Cambodia. With the current wave of student protests against the Israeli genocide in Gaza, the government’s response is looking sickeningly similar to its response to student protests in the early 70s: Violent repression, use of chemical agents, snipers on rooftops. If the vitriolic rhetoric of politicians and pundits continues, another student massacre seems imminent.

"I'll make my fortune tomorrow," Jakie said as he climbed the rickety steps to the attic room he rented.

Cold in the winter and hot in the summer, it cost less than he made on a bad day and that was good enough.

He set his lute on his bed and went to light a lantern with his feeble flame. It was still early enough to read or pick at a new tune.

His lone window was already open for the year and the breeze was only faint-

How he even saw the injured fairy, he wasn't quite sure. But Jakie moved to help-

And Jakie's fortune changed right then.

Helice tried not to recoil from the smell when she took the lid off the pot to peek inside.

The instructions had warned that there would be an odor, but-

It had been four hours and she'd peeked four times and each time had been as bad as the first even though she was expecting it.

But the magic was working, slowly but surely. That, Helice was sure of. Soon, she'd be able to begin the summoning and then reap the rewards of her effort...

First, though, Helice thought as she put the lid back on the pot, she needed to air out her kitchen.

Ophir handed Adin a pair of shears big enough to cut chains.

"We only trim the tips," Ophir explained, grinning. "Unless there's other damage, that's all they'll need."

"Just the tips," Adin repeated. "Okay..."

"I'll make sure you don't clip too close to the quick," Ophir continued. "It's hard to spot on some of the darker ones."

Adin nodded. This sounded a little complicated.

"Unless you'd go back to dishing out the meat scraps?"

"No, no..." Adin was quite tired of that. Wyvern care was his dream, after all...

With sharp claws.

"You want to interview me about my profession?" Winny asked the little girl at the door.

The girl nodded. "School assignment. Please?"

Winny cackled. She was happy to talk about her craft, after all, and she invited the little girl in.

The questions were simple, and the little girl wrote as quickly as she could in spidery pencil.

"Why did you become a witch?"

"Because I wanted to cackle when I laughed, not snort," Winny said. "That and I have strong magic."

"Oh!" The little girl grinned. "I snort when I laugh..."

"Well how's your magic?"

An artist friend had this back when it released, iirc. Beautiful designs, interesting anatomy. Definitely interesting because this seems to be a Japanese release. (I don't remember what artist friend had, alas, but I'm guessing there's also a Korean edition?)

This is unprecedented. Brown University strikes a deal with its students to end their peaceful protest & encampment, in exchange for a formal divestment vote from Israeli interests. And no student will be punished for protesting. This is democracy at work.

Heat Death of the Internet. I don't know whether to laugh or cry at this only-slightly-exaggerated description of what life on the internet is like in early-mid-2024. takahe.org.nz/heat-death-of-th
