という質問に答えてみた． @andresvillaveces との議論の続きで言えば，これは，ここに toot すべきか (#Fedibird はまだ mastodon の古い version を使っているので toot である) ，@sakaefuchino で publish すべきか迷ってしまう内容である．今，選択公理が話題の一つとなっているトポロジーの expository paper を (英語で) 書いているので，この Quora の回答も，実はそれと連動している．

@sakaefuchino@mathstodon.xyzQuora では，\(\LaTeX\) が使えるのだが，この Quora の post は，utf-8 の記号だけで書き切っている．昔の ascii の時代や，sjis などでの日本語フォントの時代だったらありえない話である．僕の名前の漢字がもとの sjis には入っていなくて，略字でない方の漢字で代用して書いたりしていたのは今思い出すと別世界のようだ．しかし，考えてみると，文字の問題で苦労することが少なくなったのは，比較的最近のような気がする．例えば今主に使っているのは，MacOS の terminal 上で開いたサーバー上の二つの #emacs だが，この設定で utf-8 の記号全部がほぼ問題なく使えるようになったのは，多分，この２年くらい間のことではないかと思う．
emacs の M-x view-hello-file で，
你好 안녕하세요 など全部問題なく表示できるようになったのも，2016年に Mac に移ってからである．ただし，右から左に書く言語では שָׁלוֹם が，左右逆になってしまうなど表示があまりうまくいっていない．今時間がなくてまだ ventura に update していないのだが，この update で残っている問題も解決することを期待している．

@andresvillaveces I believe there are local modifications of the computational environment for each individual major language. The problem I think is that there are no big customers needs for polyglot setting.
In the last century, I had to use mule the multilingual enhancement of emacs to type in Japanese (and also in latein alphabets). It was in this century that emacs integrated enough amount of features of mule into its standard setting so that I could run skk on emacs to type in Japanese.

@sakaefchn I'm both amazed that computers (not only Macs, also Linux boxes) somehow stopped having so many problems dealing with strange characters sometime around 2015... and that there is still a long way to go (such as the problem with displaying שָׁלוֹם correctly on some emacs/vim systems)...
