An increasingly popular conspiracy theory on China's internet right now is that the US has a $500 million budget to support or even initiate nationwide anti-zero Covid protests in China. I did a little digging to find out how this conspiracy theory was created.
For the last several years, I have dismissed the 2018 election as a one-time aberration grounded in several unique factors including Tsai’s dismal approval ratings, Han’s populist rhetoric and ability to talk about China as a market in a slightly new and different way, and a strange short-term downturn in Taiwanese identity. None of those factors were present in 2022, yet the electoral results were similar. It is no longer tenable to simply brush away 2018 as an outlier.
The point here is that Hou was soaking up all the blue votes, almost all of the neutral votes, and a few of the green votes. You can see this most clearly in District 4 (Sanchong and Luzhou). This is the greenest area in New Taipei, but Hou won it by 12%, around 30,000 votes. However, in the city council races, if you add 24,000 votes won by a blue-affiliated independent candidate to the KMT total, the DPP CC candidates beat the blue CC candidates by about 30,000 votes. There was clearly some split-ticket voting going on here.

Reactions to the 2022 elections
Turnout is a complex phenomenon, and it seems implausible to me that the decision to vote or stay home was divided neatly along party lines. It’s more likely that this was a low turnout election in which voters of all persuasions decided to sit it out. Sure, there may have been more DPP sympathizers who stayed home, but it is far more likely that the next million people to vote would have been split 55-45 than 95-5.

DoD has released the annual report to Congress on the “Military and Security Developments Involving the People’s Republic of China,” known as the China Military Power Report. The report is an authoritative assessment of the Department’s pacing challenge.
Trump dines with a Holocaust denier and it doesn’t make the front page of the New York Times. That's an example of what I call "ethics norming”: Actions that would create big scandals in the past are considered routine now. Decent people hold onto their capacity for outrage, but mainstream media think indecency by major political figures isn't news if it happens a lot.
The division of Trust & Safety focused on child sexual exploitation was already massively overstretched, and worked very long hours to crack down on CSAM, grooming and other abusive behaviors.
Musk claims child safety is a priority for Twitter.
I spoke to people who were frustrated to see that Musk is getting credit for the takedown of some hashtags associated with child sexual abuse -- a move that had been in the works for months

Elon Musk has decimated the specialist global team dedicated to tackling child sexual exploitation, leaving behind an overwhelmed skeleton crew.
This builds on @WIRED's reporting that it has just one staff member focused on this issue in Asia.
The teams in Ireland and the US are also heavily affected.

The coordinated lobbying push ramped up in the past few weeks, as the Biden administration seeks to leverage its support for Ukraine to strengthen its primary foreign policy goal - the containment of China - despite Russia's ongoing war in Europe
That concerted lobbying effort comes ahead of today's summit of Nato foreign ministers in Bucharest, where China is a key topic. But some European capitals are resisting a tougher approach to Beijing & others are anxious about any distraction from lending support to Kyiv

"This visit to Taiwan has long been a priority for the Foreign Affairs Committee," said chair of the committee, Alicia Kearns.
"The multiple challenges to security and prosperity across the globe make constructive ties between democracies, such as those enjoyed by the UK and Taiwan, all the more important."
The committee is a parliamentary body, separate from government and made up of elected lawmakers from a range of parties. It scrutinises government policy but does not have statutory powers.
The committee will hold a press conference on Dec. 2.
