Lola smiled. Her first day as a knight was going well so far.
That was mostly because she'd been assigned to guard an unmarked wooden door deep in the castle and turn away any who came asking for entry.
She was a bit curious as to what she was guarding, but Lola hadn't peeked. Neither of the two castle staff she'd turned away had commented on it, either.
Suddenly, late in the day, the door opened and the crown prince stepped out. Lola stared at him and he just smiled sheepishly.
"Thanks."
And then she saw that he was holding a book.
Somehow, the conversation turned to things that relatives or friends had asked to temporarily store and then...
"I spent six months staring at that trailer," Carly complained. "Gave me fifty bucks when he came and got it."
"Had a buddy's yardboat for five years," Bill said, laughing. "At least it wasn't in front of the house but behind the big barn. After the first year, I put a ladder on it and let the kids use it as a fort."
Bruce grinned. He was going to win this one.
"My pilot cousin was going through a divorce and her plane..."
There has been a small wave of spam tonight, consisting of images containing nothing but a QR code. (Do not scan these!) They're directly mentioning users, so may not be visible on everyone's feeds. We've suspended some affected instances, but in addition, there are some Mastodon settings you can configure that should help you avoid getting this type of spam.
1. Click on Notifications.
2. Click the gear icon to open settings.
3. You'll see five categories of accounts, each with a button that opens a dropdown menu.
4. Choosing Filter or Ignore on "People you don't follow," "New accounts," and "Unsolicited private mentions" should prevent you from seeing most spam. (Some of these settings might also filter out mentions you do want to see, so adapt this to your own needs.)
If you're using a third-party app, these settings may be different.

"It's all junk," Zeta said as she kicked at the rusted remains of something she couldn't identify.
They'd been sent to a site to search for useful artifacts from a previous civilization and it was pretty much just rust and debris.
"Pick some to take back anyway."
"Yeah, I know." Zeta poked at the half-collapsed wall Vaseraga had been investigating.
One stone moved, then another and another, revealing a staircase leading down...
This, this wasn''t rust or debris.
Weapons in hand, they descended.
I somehow managed to write 33 little stories over the weekend towards my #WritingMonth goal of 100. Quite a few of these fit in single posts, etc. so it's not a high word count. But it is a lot of little things out of my mind and my notes and that's good!
(I don't know if I'll change my goal or not.)
This photo was sold to me as being “ca. 1960s” but it looks later to me. It's beautiful, regardless!
Fresh game in off the presses this morning!

Vicki first saw the fox on the first day of August. The sun was down but the world was still hot.
Smart fox, she thought, when it didn't run out in front of her car. She didn't really like her job, but of course she still went.
The fox was there the next night, too. Hunting, Vicki thought. It was there almost every night...
The last day of August, she stopped her car and opened the passenger door.
"Where are we going?" she asked when the fox didn't hesitate before hopping in.
She closed the door...
It wouldn't be to work, she knew.
"Are you hungry?" Neil asked, curious. "Or is there anything else you need?"
"I'm fine."
"This is new to me," Neil admitted as he fidgeted with the sheets. "You probably guessed. I don't think I did a very good job making the bed."
"Making the bed is overrated. As long as you're comfortable, you're doing it right."
"You're right..."
Neil wasn't entirely sure what to do. He'd made it to university without ever having an under-the-bed before. Now he had one and it even had a monster!
Carefully, he reached for the bed skirt...
"So, um..."
