The war was over and Howe had been given his medals and pay and been sent home to his wife and child.

He had made them up, some time after the first week, when all the others had been talking about husbands and wives and children and family.

Howe didn't even have a dog longing for his eventual return. He hadn't made one of those up, though he'd debated it.

Instead Howe had his drafty rented room, which thankfully hadn't been cleared of his meager belongings. With his pay, he could move, once he found somewhere...

Maybe he'd get a dog.

As a woman with #PCOS and whose testoterone has been measured as 'elevated' because of it, I can't help but watch the #olympics drama and shake my damn head in rage.

Transphobes and TERFs attacking women that dont live up to their bizarre fucking standards put us ALL at risk! Their idiotic attacks on cis and trans folks are NOT feminist and are NOT "for the safety of women".

It is simply so that they can police our appearence and behaviour to fit their traditional ideas of what a woman is supposed to be.

Fuck them.

Sealey challenge day 4 (catchup): Ono no Komachi and Izumi Shikibu

"We live
in a tide-swept inlet
floating, flung.
In such a world, why cling to
collections of poems?"

I needed a palate cleanser after the last book, and this one seemed appropriate for Tanka Thursday. I really enjoy classical Japanese poetry, to the point that I'm trying to learn Japanese to appreciate it better. I liked this collection, but I wish it came as a bilingual edition!

every game, even mobile gacha ones, should have an end-of-life final patch with a server client or a option like GameRanger for a third-party server.

The game doesn't just vanish, you can just get a fully unlocked mode, with everything farmable, a farewell message, and a little trophy stand that you can email yourself a PDF of.

Oh the humanity!

(NB: If you use alt text let me know if this is acceptable because the OCR on this was an absolute mess. I don't know if the caps might be a problem.)

Tomorrow's new moon marks the start of the 7th month of the traditional Chinese lunisolar calendar. In #Taiwan it is also known as #GhostMonth. 👻

There are fascinating cultural rules to follow during this month:
• Don't mention the word "ghost".
• Don't go near open water.
• Don't turn around if you hear someone call your name from behind.
• Don't tap on others' shoulders.
• Serve a feast of delicious snack foods for the ghosts to party!

In case you want to find any former Game Informer staffers, PC Gamer has a screenshot of the handy goodbye post listing their names, which disappeared when GameStop nuked the account (after deleting the magazine's website).

"While GameStop continues its course of erasing Game Informer's footprint from the internet, former GI staff at the independent publication MinnMax are planning a celebration of the publication's legacy with a series of videos and podcasts."

One of our neighbors isn’t doing so good. They’ve canceled their vacation plans.

A stark reminder to do what makes you happy, enjoy the time you’ve got and to spend it wisely with the people you love and who love you.

Life is beautiful, and it’s worth fighting for. 🍀

Today, August 5, is the Midsummer Day of the Ox (Doyo no Ushi no Hi in Japanese). Let's eat delicious eel! It's a Japanese custom to eat eel (unagi in Japanese) on the Midsummer Day of the Ox.

As a Blind person i never thought i would be on social media savoring photos. But the communal Mastodon alt text game is so strong that sweet, poetic or silly descriptions abound on my timeline. Thanks to legions of people who take time to write a meaningful description of the ephemera they post, i learn so much about insects, plants, buildings, memes — all dispatches from a dimension of the world that i otherwise wouldn't experience. If you're wondering whether anybody reads these things: YES.

I'm really only getting bits of the Olympics via socmed and it's a perfect yoyo of "aahh, faith in humanity restored" and "aww, faith in humanity destroyed"

(the athletes mostly doing the first, the socmed mostly doing the second)

Kitsune Tails is OUT NOW!! Run, jump, and dash across a land inspired by Japanese mythology and untangle the love triangle between three young women on a journey of self discovery. Explore the complicated relationships between kitsune and humans through classic platforming action.

get it now on steam store.steampowered.com/app/132 or itch eniko.itch.io/kitsunetails

we're a small underfunded team with a majority queer developers, and while we're punching way above our weight class we need the support of our community if this game is going to be a success. please boost this post, and if you can afford it buy it on steam and leave a positive review on the first day (the text doesn't matter, only the thumbs up, so "i like gay fops" is totally valid as a review)

i also want to prove fedi is powerful enough to make an indie game succeed, so even if you're not personally that into the game, please boost this post? 🙏

If you're an EU citizen and you hate DRM and planned obsolescence, here's an easy petition for you to sign:

stopkillinggames.com/eci

TL;DR: If online-only DRM servers shut down, publishers would be required to keep your game working regardless.

Only targets video games because that is where this practice is by far the most prevalent today, but it would set a precedent that we might soon need for things like phones, cars, and all the other things that are increasingly getting CPUs shoved inside them.

1 year to reach 1 million signatures.
