I joined #WritingMonth!! I still haven't decided on a project and goal yet, but it's nice just to see writers starting a new community away from (redacted)! If you're doing this too, let's be friends!!

botsin.space PSA

Hey friends, it's hard to write this, but it's time to retire botsin.space. I wrote a post about it here: muffinlabs.com/posts/2024/10/2

TLDR the site will go read-only on or around December 15th.

I'm so thankful for all the support and good times here ❤️ thanks everyone

Two students who discovered a novel proof of the Pythagorean theorem in 2022 have wowed the math community again with nine completely new solutions to the problem.

While still in high school, Ne'Kiya Jackson and Calcea Johnson from Louisiana used trigonometry to prove the 2,000-year-old Pythagorean theorem, which states that the sum of the squares of a right triangle's two shorter sides are equal to the square of the triangle's longest side (the hypotenuse).

Mathematicians had long thought that using trigonometry to prove the theorem was unworkable, given that the fundamental formulas for trigonometry are based on the assumption that the theorem is true.

Jackson and Johnson came up with their "impossible" proof in answer to a bonus question in a school math contest.
They presented their work at an American Mathematical Society meeting in 2023, but the proof hadn't been thoroughly scrutinized at that point.

Now, a new paper published Monday (Oct. 28) in the journal American Mathematical Monthly shows their solution held up to peer review.
Not only that, but the two students also outlined nine more proofs of the Pythagorean theorem using trigonometry.

I just signed up for WritingMonth, a chill alternative to that other November event. Choose your own goal and write stuff!

If you want to be buddies I'm kalloway there as well.

Guess what just launched? https://writingmonth.org

I'm proud to announce #WritingMonth, a challenge to meet your writing goals in the next 30 days. Pick your own goal that best challenges you and write your novel, short stories, poems, stage or screen play, blog posts, or any other writing project as part of a growing community of writers.

Note: I had to rush development a lot to make it by the November deadline, so there are a few things still missing or incomplete, but overall the site is ready to start up our challenge. I'll be continuing to fill in new and upgraded features as time allows over the coming days and weeks.

Boosts are very welcome!

#Zine The Unknown Women of Content Moderation #DataWorkersInquiry

Many female data workers in Nairobi endure sexual, mental, and physical abuse. This zine sheds light on their experiences as women, mothers, and migrants working as content moderators at #Sama.

"My name is Botlhokwa Ranta, and I have authored this Zine about women like myself who worked at a company named Sama, doing content moderation for Meta in Nairobi, Kenya. Sama is considered by some as a new-age sweatshop that exploits workers’ rights whenever possible. With this zine, I wanted to shed light on our gendered experiences in this working environment, where our vulnerable positions as young women, migrants, and mothers were exploited. Most of the stories are traumatic and come from a place of pain and tragedy. These stories aim to show the world that there are women who would literally go to the ends of the earth for their children and endure the unthinkable. After so much physical, sexual, and mental trauma, we deserve to be heard loud and clear. The stories are told by real women who went through real-life traumatic experiences while working at Sama in Nairobi....."

"It's not quite the same," Ester admitted as she led Jill out onto the quiet beach. The sun-baked sand was warm beneath her feet; she was glad she'd already kicked off her sandals.

"It's beautiful," Jill replied. The moon was full and bright and made the sand look nearly white.

They smiled at each other, though Ester's smile was wider. Jill still tried to hide her fangs even when they were alone.

"Probably don't need to dig out the suntan lotion..." Ester laughed. So many things had changed...

"No." Jill smiled, wider. "It tastes terrible."

"Every day we hone our skill..." Kris sang as they chopped one vegetable after another into perfect little cubes.

"Every day another kill..." Those days were past; Kris had traded their sword for a chef's knife.

"Every day we eat our fill..." Kris was in charge of that, now, and they really didn't mind.

Kris kept singing and chopping, swishing their tail to the rhythm. They'd left the battlefield behind and gently introduced proper seasoning to the stew-pot.

One great battle had been lost; one greater battle had been thankfully won.

Oct. 28: Do you make any of your work available for free? Would you?

Basically all of it! I'm happiest as a hobby writer.

Eventually I may gather up some of my favorite little stories and make them into physical zines but even then, I'll just sell at cost.
