personally I think the MONA thing is hilarious, especially in the context of the Discourse.
for non-Australians, the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) in Tasmania had an area called the Ladies Lounge, where men were not allowed. They hung several fake Picassos, an antique mink rug that was actually polyester, and a bunch of fake tribal spears. The idea was that it was a criticism of the general idea of the patriarchy where men typically have a lot more opportunities for... pick a thing. Even when women were allowed in, what was actually inside were cheap replicas devoid of any amount of authenticity. It's ripping on token inclusion.
In an eye-watering display of self-awareness deficiency, a man then sued MONA for not being allowed in, claiming discrimination due to being a man. He claimed that as he had paid admission to the whole of MONA but was not permitted to this specific exhibit due to his gender, he was being discriminated against.
The Tasmanian Civil Tribunal agreed, and MONA was directed to admit men into a women's-only area. The irony is thick enough that you could cut it with a knife.
MONA, in response, dismantled the exhibit except for the fake Picassos. All the bathrooms at MONA are single-occupancy all-gender, but it turns out having a women's bathroom from which men are excluded *isn't* discriminatory, so they converted one into a women's bathroom and hung the fake Picassos in there, an exhibit of itself.
The art exhibit was basically a criticism of "turns out the only safe space for women away from men is a bathroom, and people will still claim that you're getting special rights because you get to see something nobody else can. Even if what you're seeing is a cheap replica, someone somewhere will claim that you have it good because you're getting something they don't."
Picasso's estate, however, took a rather dim view of unauthorised replicas being displayed in an art gallery in Tasmania, even though it was literally years between putting up the artwork and someone noticing. They've since been taken down with no further action.
MONA has declared that the Ladies Lounge will return as something where S26 of the Sex Discrimination Act doesn't apply, such as a church or boutique glamping experience.
They've also expressly stated that the Ladies Lounge includes ALL women, not just cis ones.
I love everything about this story. Fucking classic stuff coming out of the art world.
Here's a really cool rain-filled skull from a gravestone. #graveyard #gothic #art #architecture #churches #skull
Once upon a time, I also had bits of the Slayers manga but it wasn't anything not in the novels/anime and it was really hard to find, so I gave up on it.
Next shelf is all CLAMP, but not all-the-CLAMP. I know Rayearth is elsewhere... I also don't own like, half their stuff. But enough to fill a shelf+
And now I think it's time for a break. It's hot and I'm starting to go aaaaaaaa about things.
(Oh, also took a handful of Macross Frontier gashapon to the kitchen to get washed/cleaned up. Minor sticky + minor dust = bath time!)
Displaced all of Beauty Pop, a really cute shoujo manga about high school hair stylists (seriously, super-cute, excellent as-is no notes) and Slayers, whoops.
I am a very out-of-sight/out-of-mind person so I don't normally double-row books but for now and also because I can put these in front of Alita which I have concrete-ish plans for.
Slayers is all? of the anime + the eight light novels that Tokyopop put out. I know that the novels are being retranslated and getting physical releases; I should look into them.
I am all for the manga-ka doing whatever he wants but yeah, no.
What I should probably do is sell all of it and pick up that really fancy boxed set of the original manga if it's still available.
(That's part of this exercise - seeing what I'm still missing or can replace with 'better' copies where 'better' sometimes means newer translations or not flopped/mismatched or whatever. Obvs not going to that with everything because $$ but for the stuff that's meant a lot to me, sure why not.)
Also a little goofy series by the same manga-ka, on that shelf.
Huge random gap is where the YnM manga goes, which was piled elsewhere. It's now put away. I have the B'tX anime, but there wasn't room so it's now on the next shelf up along with basically all of Terra e and an incredibly varied collection of Battle Angel Alita stuff.
I like Alita. I don't talk about it much because it's... just one of those things I like as-is but don't have many thoughts on other than 'yay Alita'.
I also have like ten volumes of the sequel/director's cut manga which I don't like as much and eventually gave up on.
Tote of childhood(ish) stuffed animals. These should go somewhere better, but not today. Maybe I can rearrange the top shelf in the walk-in closet one day? Picked out two later-acquisitions to go, will debate on a couple other beanie babies that are nice but I'm not super attached to.
(See, the decision-fatigue already.)
A bookcase! Bottom shelf is the whole run of Uraboku/The Betrayal Knows My Name, which I knew I owned but couldn't have told you where. Then all of B'tX, a huge random gap, and the Yami no Matsuei anime.
A dead CD player. Was left beside the dumpster in the 'don't need anymore maybe someone else can use' area and just... never tested it. Turns on, doesn't do anything else. Alas!
Bag of junk mail dragged in from car. This is recent and I have no idea how it got in here. Dishonor on the cow of whatever charity I donated to who promptly sold my info, though. I now get like three begging letters per day, generally from groups I have no problem with but this has reached the point of ridiculousness. Most of this went to recycling.
First pile, at the doorway- a bunch of posters, mostly anime, some from concerts, one from a university Roe anni celebration (ouch) decades ago- fished out three to go and many of the others will get debated.
Underneath, a box of card-backs from my Monster High doll collection. I've been selling the loose dolls without card-backs and they don't seem to have much value. Might put them in a plastic tote in the garage for a bit, once I acquire a plastic tote.
(Easy enough - my 'rents have a stash from their cleanouts. Just need to pick one up.)
So it is time to clean out the bookroom. Other people may have spare bedrooms, or second bedrooms, but I just have a room with bookshelves and it's lovely. Except it's also... a disaster.
Some of it is from a few years ago when I renovated my big walk-in closet. Weirdly when I was done, I had a ton of extra space but the bookroom was cluttered. And then my job went ridiculous but I also continued acquiring books (and other media).
So it is time. It will not be a fast process, because I get decision-fatigue easily. ^^;;
Time travel is ruining archaeology.
Six months in a mosquito filled jungle excavating the giant stone heads of the Olmec.
Another six months at the museum laboriously documenting the inscriptions found, the first examples of pre-BCE writing in mesoamerica.
A team of grad students cracking the script, proving the suspected links between proto Mixe-Zoquean, classical Olmec, and later Mayan dialects.
First translation: THE GREAT FEATHERED SERPENT IS NEVER GONNA GIVE YOU UP. THE GREAT FEATHERED SERPENT IS NEVER GONNA LET YOU DOWN.
When we get the dates for these inscriptions, we will find you, and we will make you cry.
Seven Seas have just announced three more
#danmei
novel licences: Legend of Exorcism, Dinghai Fusheng Records and Riverbay Road Men's Dormitory all by Fei Tian Ye Xiang.

They had previously announced a couple of weeks ago that they'd licenced the manhua for Dinghai Fushen Records.
This announced now is for them licencing the novel too.
TFW your laptop/phone is low on battery so you plug it in to the power cable and then you keep using it and 20 minutes later you realize it is even lower on battery and then you realize the *other end* of the power cable is just sitting on the floor, not plugged in to anything
Dear young people:
Facebook started the practice of people using their real names on social media.
This is why you don't know that the Internet was generally like this before the age of social media. The Internet has returned to normal in this one regard.
