Spiritist's Net ("web")

It looks like silk gauze while it's folded, so fine it could be drawn through a finger-ring.

In truth it's even finer, fine as spider silk once unfurled, and nearly as difficult to see.

Spread across a doorway or any surface, it can hardly be detected. A drop of blood renders it nonexistent for all but the donor -- and wandering spirits, who leave dewdrops of plasm behind as they pass.

A way to identify shades?
A way to glean their power?

Yes.

No. 20 - Web

Rodrick told stories and those stories told stories, and how he ever kept them straight for as long as he did became a great mystery. But eventually his web of lies and half-truths and stories caught up to him and he vanished one night. His reflection appears in the old pond. Unless that's just a story.

Binding Mirror ("chain")

Oh, it's not what it sounds like; no restless dead is pinned or trapped by the Mirror.

It's more useful and more dangerous than that.

Hold your Mirror up, see the spectre in its face; see the slender shackles of longing, silver and rose and blood and black, writhing around them?

Look, until the Mirror shows you exactly what it is that keeps the spirit from rest --

Of course, a secret is a secret. The shade may not appreciate the intrusion.

No. 19 - Chain

Cliff (The Other One) was a big guy who'd help out anyone in a pinch. He was strong and kind and never asked for anything in return. He drags long chains on cold nights, rattling and scraping along, sure to wake up someone to see whose car broke down on the old side road.

No. 18 - Quack

Mia tried every remedy there was, and then a few more, hoping for some miracle cure. She sought advice from folks who grew stranger and stranger still, offering all she had and then some. But her heart remained broken and that was that. There's something in that glass bottle she's seen with, but it isn't love.

Henry ("quack")

Henry is a duck.

Henry ... was a duck?

No duck should live -- could live -- as long as Henry. If Henry is alive. And that part is highly dubious.

Some folks, spooked to their bones, say Henry has eight round beady eyes on one side.
Some folks say you can see straight through him.

Everyone says he quacks like a human laughs, like a madman laughs.

And you never see him arrive.

Maybe Henry wasn't always a duck?

He likes to follow folks around ...

Three times in the last two days. I want to raise them all! (The other one was a couple weeks ago, level 200 was a spring project. I'm still a lower-rank/fairly "new" player.)

The Cave Man ("prehistoric")

He's been waiting a very long time.

So long, his shade looks like no one who lives near this dark cold cavern; not for centuries, millennia, more.

But he's still waiting.

Waiting for someone to climb down, down ...

Past the skulls far larger than any wolf in memory.

To the place where his bones, and shell palettes, and fur brushes, rest on the clay.

Waiting for someone to finish the painting of deer, of horses, guided by old cold hands.

No. 17 - Prehistoric

Rena thought she'd found a dinosaur bone in her garden and called all the neighbors to see. There was a grand fuss until someone pointed out it was likely just from a cow or horse. She kept digging anyway, and she's still digging in the new pharmacy's parking lot to this day.

There's so much of cultural shame around having non-productive time, and we need to end that.

Having time when you're struggling to get started is normal. Having time where you're off-task is normal. Having time when you're lost in thought is normal

"As a knight," the king said, "it is your duty to kill dragons."
"Very well, my liege," the knight said. "Um. May I ask why?"
"Because they hoard wealth without sharing, and people live in fear of their capricious moods."
"Very well, my liege," the knight said and drew his sword.
