I'm an infrastructure person. What I want to know is why we have infrastructure supplying 1/3rd of households with natural gas. Is that more than Europe/Japan? Is there a reason why, since it seems redundant to electricity?

@ErrataRob Redundant systems become welcome during disasters. In Japan, for instance, some households began transitioning to all electric in the mid ‘00s, but it became less popular after the ‘11 multi-disaster when the relatively robust electricity infrastructure came under scrutiny. The event even sparked a resurgence in battery/hand sparked kerosene stoves, which were already ubiquitous as AC powered ignition and fan models. In rural areas where piped natural gas is unavailable, LP gas is standard equipment.
