It has been on my mind for the longest time, but after discussing with my sensei I finally started self-training with a bō (long staff). I’m studying the basics with video material, and started daily 10-15min exercises in a neighbor park. My mid-term objective is to learn a kata and do a small demonstration in my dojo to other black belts!
ずっと考えてましたが、先生と相談した上に棒術の稽古を始めました。動画で基本動作を習って、近所の公園で毎日10~15分の練習を始めました。中期的な目標として型を習得し、道場で他の黒帯に演武を披露することです!

@OctaviaConAmore I did not know you were training! You are a lady of many talents😺 Do you practice jodo? Staffs are the best, “pacific” weapons I know. Not designed to harm people, but help self-defense.
@Nexus5 I tend to like a lot of things that involve my hands and a bit of coordination With Jodo specifically, I'm of the same mind you are: they're basically just walking sticks very nice for being pacifist while still having something around just in case.
In my case, I started out with a jō staff in Aikido, then expanding on that during the pandemic by watching 2 or 3 Jodo instructors in Japan that put out videos. For testing things, one of my roommates also has jō staff knowledge so we can do things in the yard when the mood suits us (though I at least keep some leather gloves on so that I don't hurt my fingers, just in case).
@Nexus5 To clarify, I don't keep a jō staff around with me when I'm out and about in public, but jojutsu can make long umbrellas slightly better for self defence in an emergency
@OctaviaConAmore Ok so you have an aikido background, I understand now.
Great things you have a partner for practicing! I may have to convince a couple of people at my dojo to practice with me 😅 And yes, protect your violinist fingers at all cost
@Nexus5 I hope things go well! I use the slightly shorter jō staff and love the combination of "this is my walking stick" and "this stick teaches me body coordination and trains my strength"
