The morning was already getting warm, Alister noticed as he debated between a high collar or a scarf to cover the telltale marks on his neck.

He did honest work, but the aftermath was always a little awkward, especially when there was shopping to do before the next job.

He didn't mind one of the group being a vampire nor donating when necessary, but...

Well there was probably a compromise that could be made, but that discussion would have to wait until evening.

Alister glanced at the vampire sleeping in his bed and went with the scarf.

Nobody tied bows like Aunt Esther did. Well, nobody wrapped gifts or made fancy gift baskets or anything else like Aunt Esther, either.

But Karla only needed a bow tied, at least for the time being.

Aunt Esther smiled as she tugged the last loop into place.

"Will this do, dear?"

Karla nodded and then grinned at the stone statue that had been bound a dozen times in decorative thick plaid ribbon.

"I know your work, Auntie. And if this statue really does walk around at night, well, it's not going to get far without us knowing.

"Now we wait!"

"... and that's the real reason why it's best to cremate witches, wizards, and other magical folk," Instructor Lydie concluded.

Her students continued scratching notes for a moment before, one by one, they looked up and slowly considered their instructor that they only ever saw in class and the shining brass urn that sat beside the chalkboard.

There was silence for a long moment before one student finally raised his hand.

"Then you're actually..." he started without being called on.

"Not at all done instructing, thank you very much."

Alister stood in front of his Lady's grave, not at all troubled by the tears that streamed down his cheeks.

He had not known her for more than a handful of years, but he had loved her with all his heart and would have lived his entire life at her side if she hadn't decided to end her lingering unlife.

"I've taken a new job, with a small group of undead mercenaries that need my skills," Alister said softly as he touched the stone of her memorial.

"I'll make you proud," he continued. "I know you worried, but...

"I think I'll finally be okay."

How important is representation to you? If a movie, series, book whatever has a flavour of representation is that sufficient or do you need more?
What if it's a genre you tend not to get on with + representation you'd like to see more of?

Asking because this seems like another area where I'm out of sync with a lot of fans. I value representation highly but I don't get the all-consuming warm fuzzies others seem to just from the fact that there's representation.

Artist Hitomi Terasawa drew a meticulous cross-sectioned rendering of Hong Kong's infamous Kowloon Walled City before it was razed in 1994. Now we have rare scans revealing the inner workings of the labyrinth-like metropolis.

Got involved in a discussion about female knights in the new version of Pendragon, and I averred that in my 20+ years of sword/axe/spear combat, gender has made little difference for the outcome of a fight.

The weapons do the work, and the weapons do not come in pink and blue.

There followed a lot of goal post shifting.

"Muscles and weight matter in MMA!"
Which is unarmed.

"HEMA isn't with lethal intent!"
Neither is any other modern martial art, including MMA.

"It's ahistorical!"
So's magic

You don't need to be trans to pick a new name for yourself

Sometimes you grow out of the name someone else picked for you, and that's okay!

They picked it before they knew you, and now that you're old enough to know who you are, you can totally pick something that fits

Periodically, I like to reread my favorite Scottish peom: Batman's Aff His Nut by Robert Florence.

In the United States, we have plenty of current ongoing problems. But a lot of them are actually the hangover from past mistakes and disasters: slavery and Jim Crow, incredibly late and incomplete rights for women, etc.

One I don't think we talk about enough is how badly my generation (X-ish) was screwed up by the concept of "stranger danger." That people you didn't know were the primary thing to fear. It's statistically and logically nonsense, but so much bad is built on and supported by it.
