“It *has* been rather in his shadow, hasn’t it?”
Eli smiled. Once, he’d indeed felt that way.
But not anymore. Not for a long time.
“I’m not worried about it,” he assured Nightswan. “The future is what you make of it, as my father used to say. I’m a commander, I have a fairly decent list of victories on my ledger, and I’d like to think I’ve picked up one or two friends along the way.”
“Really?” Nightswan said. “Because Thrawn doesn’t seem to have. Not politically astute at all, from what I hear.” He snorted. “As for you, my young idealist commander, do you really think you have any friends on Coruscant? A Wild Space nobody who’s spent his entire career as a house pet to a nonhuman?”

Nightswan turns and begins walking toward the mining complex. “I have read about the nightswan,” Thrawn called after him. “Have you?”
Nightswan turns partially back. His face is obscured by shadow. His body stance again holds weariness, along with a quiet dread. “You refer to the fact that it sings only as night is falling?”
“Yes,” Thrawn said. “You do not expect your stand to succeed, do you?”
“I know that it won’t succeed,” Nightswan said.
“That does not necessarily mean the end. I can give orders for you to be taken unharmed.”
“They’ll be ignored. Half the troops here are Batonn Defense, and Restos is determined to get rid of me.”
“Then come with me now.”
“A man must do what he must, Admiral Thrawn. Even if his stand is against the fall of eternal night.”

The Chiss was still hunched over, little but his face still visible.

Thrawn, without Vader’s bioenhancements or the Force, would be hard-pressed to carry the extra load. Not to mention that he looked less like a living being than he did the midway point of some sculptor’s artwork.
Though to be fair, Vader didn’t look any better. Once back aboard ship, Thrawn could simply change clothing, while Vader would need his armor cleaned in more time-consuming detail. Fortunately, he had another full set in his quarters that he could wear while the Chimaera’s techs restored this one.
“Of course,” Thrawn said. With an effort, he squatted beside one of the bodies.

“Let us hope we are not too late,” he added as he made his slightly staggering way toward the door.

“I know that, my lord.” Thrawn said. “But I would still ask you to trust me.”
Vader eyed him, stretching out to the Force. The Jedi, too, had been distrusted and his opinions casually dismissed, often by the people he was closest to. He, too, had known how it felt to be powerful, yet somehow still an outsider. “Tell me of the prisoners taken from Batuu.”
“I cannot,” Thrawn said. “I can say only that it is vital we recover them.”
“If I demand an answer?”
“I cannot answer,” Thrawn repeated. “I can only ask that you trust me.”
Vader clenched his teeth. “One cannot simply ask for trust, Admiral,” he warned harshly. “Trust must be earned.”
“I agree,” Thrawn said. “I ask one more hour.”
Vader looked out at the flowing hyperspace sky. “One hour,” he agreed. “And then, Admiral, you will answer my questions.”

“There came a moment when I had completed the task the Chiss Ascendancy had set for me,” Thrawn continued. “At that point I was free to abandon him to his own task.” He turned to face Vader. “You have that same freedom of choice. I am asking that you remain at my side.”

He scowled, forcing back the emotion. That couldn’t have been what the Chiss meant by that comment. Vader had simply misread it, that was all. “Anakin Skywalker is dead,” he said.
“So I was informed,” Thrawn said. He bowed his head slightly—acknowledgment or sorrow; Vader couldn’t tell which. “But for his sake, and for the sake of the Republic he served and the Empire that the Republic became, I ask you to return the debt of my service to its proper balance.”
Vader clenched his teeth. Balance to the debt. *Balance to the Force.* Without knowing it, Thrawn was hitting all the trigger words, and in the process pulling up far too many of The Jedi’s unwanted memories. “There is no debt,” he said. “You had a choice. You made it. The Empire does not owe you.”
“No, it does not,” Thrawn said.
For a long moment, they gazed at each other in silence.

The grand admiral was smart and subtle, but never used his brilliance to show up or humiliate anyone. He demanded results, but never perfection, and had amazing stores of patience for those who were truly working to their fullest ability. He cared about his people, to the point of standing up for them even against the disapproval of powerful men like Lord Vader.

It was a pity Thrawn’s style of leadership hadn’t spread through the rest of the navy.（你在说打死伟大吗🤣）Still, he was certainly having an influence on the younger officers. If he lasted long enough, maybe those lessons would someday become the military standard.
If that happened, he suspected, the Empire would stand forever.

“Still, even a partial success can bring long-reaching results,” Thrawn said into the awkward silence. “As it is, we have now learned a great deal about our new enemies.”
“Such as the fact they have no teeth?” Vader said with an edge of bitterness.
“That, as well,” Thrawn agreed.

“Indeed, my lord,” Thrawn said. “More specifically, the Separatist factory on Mokivj that we once assaulted.”
Vader straightened to his full height. “That you once assaulted,” he corrected. “No one else aboard the Chimaera was ever there.”
“Of course,” Thrawn said, inclining his head. “I misspoke.”
For a long moment, they gazed at each other in silence.

It was all he could do to keep from taking her in his arms…but Thrawn was here, and the Chiss already was suspicious of their relationship.
Though why Anakin should even care about that he didn’t know. It wasn’t like Thrawn would ever go to Coruscant and tell anyone.

Vader looked up, to see a small smile on his face. “Do you find this amusing, Admiral?” he challenged.
“No, not at all, my lord,” Thrawn hastened to assure him. “I was simply recalling a memory. I told you the Chiss call this talent Third Sight. What I hadn’t yet spoken of is the title these navigators are given once they take their posts.”
“Which is?”
“The Cheunh word is ozyly-esehembo,” Thrawn said. “In Basic, it translates to ‘sky-walker.’ ” Another small smile. “You can imagine my momentary confusion when I first encountered General Anakin Skywalker.”
Vader nodded.

“Let go,” Anakin said, snapping his arm free of the Chiss’s grip. Thrawn countered by half turning and getting a fresh grip on Anakin’s collar with the other hand.

Anakin said, snapping up his arm, aiming his forearm at Thrawn’s wrist to try to break the other’s grasp. Thrawn countered by letting go just as Anakin’s arm swung harmlessly past, then reacquiring his grip. “Stop it, damn you—she’s going to die.”

“No,” Vader said flatly. “Victory is the goal.”
“And not revenge?”
“Not revenge,” Vader said. “Not even rescue.”
