If someone is proven over and over again to be a compulsive liar, perhaps good journalism is to not repeatedly regurgitate what the person says and the narrative they want to project without some context of their recent string of not so great credibility?

As I feared, after the election, everyone seems to think the emergency is over and Democracy has been saved. The emergency is only just beginning. We merely put down one aspect of the threat by preventing hard core deniers from being elected. But many already had been.

Someone asked me today about my plans for the Fall and it took me a moment to realize she meant my plans for the Autumn and not the collapse of civilization.

I've wanted people to start giving a shit about owning their space online, starting blogs, looking at alternative networks and well...it's happening.

Even if Twitter survives, millions of people are on alert and having real conversations again.

Net win.

With the whole #Twexit, Mastodon's userbase has jumped from about half a million in October to 7 million as of today.

All the admins are working hard to keep the lights on, but many only become aware of the problems when they happen.

Be patient. This will resolve, and the Fediverse will be all the stronger for it.

Meanwhile, if you want to help, head to your instance's /about page, and see if they have a patreon or tip jar.

Also, new people on Mastodon, remember that you can follow anyone on any instance. You aren't limited to the people that are on the instance you joined. This is the biggest misconception that I see.

Mastodon servers relie on volunteers and donations to keep running. Machines and bandwidth/ storage are not free. Some must be under pressure with the large influx from the bird site.
How sustainable is that I wonder...
Google wouldn't join the system, would they? Be AD based then...
